Protocols vs. Concepts / When to follow the recipe

We all have that one dish that our mom or grandmother has made for years, right? Yet they rarely follow the recipe and yet it always turns out the same - delicious. How does that happen?!

Well, it’s because they understand that the concepts often outweigh the protocols.

The same goes with rehab and treatment. Protocol based care only gets us so far.

What do we do when someone is progressing faster than expected?
What about when someone isn’t progressing fast enough?
Or what do we do when that person is actually falling behind instead of progressing at all?!

"nEW pAtiEnT SpeCiaL" / Quality Care > Marketing Gimmicks

You ever hear the phrase, “If you pay, you pay attention?” No? Well you’ve had to have heard of “you get what you pay for” then right?

I just bought a knock off Athlemon shirt from Amazon for $16 vs the Lululemon shirt I could have bought for $60. And guess what?! The quality is definitely 3.75x less. Which means it won’t last as long in the closet and therefore I’ll have to keep buying new ones more often.

Expectations of Pain / An utterly confusing relationship.

As a Chiropractor, we work within the realm of helping individuals not only get out of pain but avoid it by increasing their performance capacity as well. It’s been through these experiences of helping people that I’ve been able to gain the importance of these values and lessons which are worth sharing and elaborating on.
As patients not only are you expected to do "exercises" you are also expected to allot time for walks in nature, meditate, journal, sleep 8-9 hours, eat 10 servings of vegetables - oh and still show up for work on time after getting kids ready for school...before picking them up and making sure their homework is done, they aren't getting too much screen time, dinner is something everyone can enjoy and that they actually shower before bed

Recovery > Exercise

We usually think that we exercise or work out to build muscle, but that's dead wrong. Our activity and performance actually strains the tissue and stresses the body. So how do we get bigger, stronger, faster?! RECOVERY.

It is impossible to increase athletic or daily performance without adequate recovery. For the most simple analogy, think about how your energy levels are after a 5-day stint of less than ideal sleep patterns. Yeah, you're dragging it, right?

My Role as Your Chiropractor

Don’t Chiropractors just crack your back?!
There’s so much more to it than that.
The way I see it, my main focus as a chiropractor is to get you feeling better. Bottom line. If I at least do that, I am doing my job.
This means going beyond the simple adjustments. It means working the muscles, ligaments, blood flow, motor control and corrective exercise individually designed to get you to your specific goals.

Manifestation / Can a Negative Mental State Add to Our Issues?

“We’re doing this exercise to limit your risk of injury.”
I’ve caught myself saying this before, but I try to avoid it like the plague.
Why would we even put this negative thought remotely close to a patient’s attention while we’re working on getting them away from it?!

Providers of any discipline commonly think people get structurally or mechanically injured but forget that there’s a human attached to the bag of meat we’re working with.
This human has a deepened relationship with this injury. Maybe they’ve missed time on the field. Maybe they’ve been lacking their usual social connections with teammates because they’re stuck in rehab.
